Last year, I did something that I used to think I would never do: I organised my CDs and DVDs...
Shocking. I know.
Some of you might ask, "But how else would one organise their CDs???" to which I can only reply:
"Well, EMOTIONALLY, of course. Dummy!"
Trouble is, I couldn't find some things anymore, and it's not that I had/have that large of a collection to begin with. In fact, I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a "collection", because that makes it sound so pompous.
I just have some records. That's all.
Anyway, none of this had ever been a problem in the past, but now my brain has reached that stage, where I literally cannot remember what I did five minutes ago, let alone where I put things. Especially new(ly purchased) things that don't "have their place" yet. Plus, I always had that problem that I might stand right in front of a thing, but could not "see" it...
So, I am putting labels on (almost) everything now. That way I don't have to remember things, I just have to read what it says on the box. Besides, I like labels ... and boxes, too. ;)
This whole thing got started, when I "accidentally" purchased an album on CD that I already had ... one that I KNEW I owned. But I just couldn't find it anymore, and then I doubted myself, thinking that maaaaaybe I had only imagined owning it. So I went and ordered a used copy online...
...and the second I had done that, I found the album in question on my CD-shelf. It was right there where I thought it should have been. It was literally right in front of my nose, but I just didn't see it.
Only one week or so later, the exact same thing happened with a DVD (well, a Blu-ray, to be precise). Luckily, both were cheap, second-hand copies. But still...
...and then it took me a whole year to actually get started re-organising. Typical.
In my defense, the mere thought of having to put CDs next to each other that "don't match" ... urrrgh, it REALLY made me ick. That's why it took me a whole year to get used to the idea. -- But now that it's a done thing, it find that it makes everything so much easier. I did, however, keep all the soundtrack CDs separate from "the other" albums. Oh, and all the medieval music is locked away in a box. I mean, there are limits. Obviously...
I still haven't re-organised my vinyl-records, but I will do that next. Definitely. At some point.
I decided that this could NEVER happen again!
(Well, I wrote this blog entry. That counts as a start.)
Well, motivated by yesterday's blog-entry (and the fact that my asshole has been bleeding all day, and I couldn't do much of anything else), I actually did re-organise my records alphabetically today. Yay, achievement. What I don't understand, though, is ... HOW is it possible that I have even LESS space now than I did before??? -- The exact same thing had happen, when I re-organised my CDs and DVDs. I don't understand this. At all. It's a complete mystery to me.
Also, sorting things alphabetically only goes so far, when you're in the habit of gradually forgetting things. For example, if I were to file this NIGHTMARES IN WAX record under "N", then I would completely forget that I even own it...
These three albums here have a similar problem (or rather I do)...
...in fact, I had already forgotten that I had it (I thought I only had it as a 7", which I don't) and was rather surprised when I saw it mixed in with my DEAD OR ALIVE records. -- So, yeah ... that's where it has to stay!
I really do NOT want to file them alphabetically. They have to stay in the CHRISTIAN DEATH section, and I don't care, if this doesn't make any sense. There are limits. -- It's bad enough that I had to move the first MEPHISTO WALZ album all the way to "M". Urrrrgh.
Anyway, that's it. I'm done.
